Calgary had its "Salvation"

"Big Up" to Tundaclap and the team for the events that went on this weekend. As expected the Jump-Up-Kings, Jester and KidKut did their thing. Unfortunately the Calgary Soca staff was booked at other events this weekend so we ALL missed out, but from the looks of the comments on the promoters page, this one looks like it went off just fine.

If/when we get a look at some of the pics or video, we'll post them for you. For sure, we'll see you at the next event. Also remember, if you were at the event, feel free to comment and rate below so that we can all find out what we missed. (steuuuuuups...I vex now)

I envy T.O.

If you didn't make it to any Carnivals or festivals for the last year, here's footage from Dr Jay's legendary return fete 2k11 just to rub some salt in your wound. Ouch! The bright side is that Jester, Kid Kut and the Jump-Up-Kings will be in Calgary this weekend.

DJ Diamond - Gimmie Di Ting

'Calgary Soca' is always looking for the next big thing so imagine our surprise as we start going through our weekly selection of new tunes and we unexpectedly come across a groovy/dancehall jam from the runner up of the Calgary Carifest 2010 showcase! Big shout to Alberta's own Karella "DJ Diamond" Cummings for her work in 2k11 so far. Check out her YouTube channel for even more of what she's up to. We eh go lie, this one caught us off guard as we weren't sure how to fairly judge a song from someone you know?  Well, the answer is to put it to the "Official Wining Test!" and take a proper rating.

The Rules of the Official Wining Test are:

1) Play the music LOUD for a woman.
2) Stand up behind her.
3) Check the velocity of your woman's wine when she hears the song and rate it out of 5!

OK, So my woman gave me a little "Bumsie" roll which counts as just before 3rd gear on the 5-gear-scale.

Official Wining Test: ☆☆☆(3/5)

The REAL RATING of course is the one YOU give it.  Let us know how you feel about DJ Diamond's track below!

What exactly is Bacchanal?

For years now people have been trying to pinpoint the ACTUAL definition of Bacchanal. Here, Jase from TriniScene.com tries to get to the bottom of it all as he talks to some big names in the Soca/Chutney business, Michelle X, Ravi B, and Tallpree, at the popular Bacchanal Wednesday fete in T&T.

Problem Child - Stick On (Vincy Soca 2011)

With St. Vincent Mas coming up (Jun 24 - Jul 5 2011), we are starting to get our hands on some "Vincy" Soca. Check out the Official video for "Stick-On" from Problem Child. It might be too early to say for sure, but this one needs to grow on me so for now it gets:

Never say Canada doesn't like Soca.

Outside of the Caribbean, Toronto has to be one of the hottest places to get a solid Soca "Fix". Dr. Jay and the rest of the "KOS" family have been putting on some of the hottest fetes for years and if you haven't made it to any of them as yet, watch here to see what you're missing. Big Up,to Jay, Marxman, Dez, E-man, Soca Sweetness and the rest of the crew for always keeping the party live. (Note: Some of the people in this video have no behavior, lol)

Why I love a good fete? Let TJJ show you.

I'm always checking out Dre from 'Trini Jungle Juice'. This man always has the hookups as he gets back stage and all inclusive at some of the hottest Carnival Parties around the world.  Here he goes behind the scenes at ONE fete 2011 in T&T and catches up with Kees, well before his winning performance of "Wotless" for the Groovy Soca Monarch.  Kees gives some insight on how he and Kerwin Dubois came up with the song.

The Heatwave - Soca Season 2011

Still not up to date on the Soca hits from the first part of 2011.  Take in this mix from "The Heatwave" out of the UK.  There are a few remnants from Carnivals past, but all of it is straight heat!

Aaron Fresh and Machel Montano - Bend Over (Remix)

I first heard this remix on Red FM in Trinidad around Carnival time this year so I looked into the name Aaron Fresh.  Seems he has a record deal with Island Def Jam and like Nikki Minaj, has roots in T&T.  He's 17 and sounds like Chris Brown with hints of a Caribbean accent.  I respect what he's doing at his age and give him props for 'reppin a small island' to the fullest.  Look for his other videos, etc. on his website

Here he and Machel Montano team up for a remix to one of the hotter 'Groovy Soca' jams for 2011

The most 'Wotless' 10 mins in Calgary to date

Thanks to Youtuber "Tokie3110" we get this display from the Carifest 2010 Afterparty. Soca Queen, Allison Hinds brings some ambitious fellas on stage to see if they can "handle the ride". Calgary's Soca community is not that large, so you might make out a couple of these 'suspects' faces.

Welcome to Calgary Soca - Jester, JUK in Calgary this April.

As a longtime resident of Calgary, a promoter, and a lover of Soca music, I've started this blog so Calgary's Soca Community can keep itself in the loop with all things "Soca" in the city.  There should be lots to do and see here as the community grows.  Feel free to comment on any of my posts and get involved by 'liking' and posting on the facebook page.  The blog will be dedicated to regular reviews of events, mixes, artists and shows. Also I'm happy to introduce you to out our brand new chatroom, found on the bottom of the page and video links to the hottest Soca tracks.

Warning!  I'm going to be brutally honest with my posts, and therefore so should you! But of course lets keep it all civil and moving in a positive direction.

Alright then! Since Toronto DJ, Jester will be in Calgary this month, I figured we'd get things warm with one of his Soca mixes.  Jester rarely disappoints. Click to download

Here is the actual event on the 23rd:

Check out the facebook posting with MC Kid Kut and JUK: http://on.fb.me/iaT7qF

No, We aren't involved in this event, but Yes, you should check it out as Jester ranks as one of my Top 5 Soca DJs in Canada.

Event Rating:  'Tundaclap' has been a strong promoter in Calgary's Dancehall Reggae scene for years.  He's branching to Soca now and has made a good choice in bringing Kid Kut, Jester, and Jump-Up-Kings to play.
I won't be able to make the event myself as I'm playing  a Hip Hop/House event Saturday nite, but that shouldn't be your excuse. I can only therefore rate the event on how good I think it WILL be.

Music:
Good DJs, so even if you come by yourself, you should have a good time
☆☆☆☆ (4/5)

Location:
Haven't partied here so you will have to tell me.
(?/5)

Attendance:
I'm not sure how many invites have gone out on Facebook, or how far Tundaclap's Soca reach actually is so the actual turnout is anyone guess. We still have to grow Calgary's Soca presence, so unless this one is out of the ordinary....

Make sure you click on comment below and give us your rating out of 5stars to let us know what you thought the event went ('cause you're going right?!)  Then click on the share links, and let all the other Soca-Lovers you know about CalgarySoca.com.
