CarnivalMix-CJSW- Dec.28.2011 - Best of 2011

2011 has been a great year for Soca music; so much so that we found it a bit of a challenge to fit the "Best of the year" into a 1hr show.  After going over all the music that was played for the year, as well as each of our individual choices, it was inevitable that we were not going to agree on EVERYTHING that was chosen.  To simplify, we gathered together the most requested songs, the Soca Monarch Winners from as many islands as we could squeeze in, and the songs that were played the most for Carnivals around the world.  (A couple of our personal choices may still have slipped in)

We played the show in no particular order, but if one song had to get Track-of-the-Year, it would have to be a crowd favourite that reached further than just local Caribbean Carnivals.  With a Soul Train Award nomination each for 'Best Caribbean Performance' alongside the likes of Rihanna, the field got narrowed to Machel Montano - Bend Over and Kes the Band - Wotless. Who wins that debate might be another show entirely as Drew and Anthony give it to Kes, while Carrie is certain its Machel.  You decide.

Why recreate the wheel, when honestly this is the mix we're already playing for the season. DOWNLOAD HERE.  Honestly, you're not ready for Christmas without it.

Season's Soca Greetings

Its been quite a year for us here at CalgarySoca.com. Since we've started this project in early summer of this year, we've seen support grow week after week, so we decided to throw a Christmas party for all the Soca music lovers we knew in the city. Thank you to everyone who came out and made the fete one to remember. Big thanks to the staff at Soho Bar & Grill, "Prodigal Son" from the Black Squad for the added music, the entire CalgarySoca team, and Watermark productions for the vid.

To say that the "Antilles Riddim" has caused a stir for the Calgary Soca crowd would be an understatement. First Machel gave us the "Vibes Cyah Done" video and now Kerwin Dubois delivers the official video for his jam on the riddim, "Bacchanalist."

T.O. pioneer, Dr. Jay brings "Soca Therapy" to new radio station

If you've been listening to Soca in Canada for the last few years then you should know the name "Dr.Jay" and his legendary Soca show on the "old" FLOW 93.5 that "made you wine from 6 to 9 every Sunday.

Earlier this year, with a complete format change, many of the specialty programs were dropped from the station leaving Torontonian's wondering where they would get their next Soca fix. It seems the good Doctor has found a new home according to the official "Soca Therapy" website post earlier this week:

'So you heard from this one and from that one that SOCA THERAPY is coming back and we can officially confirm that the rumours are TRUE. Dr. Jay's immensely popular radio show will be returning to Toronto's airwaves in its new time slot on SUNDAYS from 5p - 8p, on Toronto's newest radio station G98.7fm. Keep it locked for updates on the premiere episode of the new SOCA THERAPY. Thanks for your continued support.'

Congrats again to Jay and the New KOS family. The station will be streaming live so you know we'll be tuning in when it starts.

'Funding Drive' will keep Soca on the radio in 2012

The show itself is pretty young, (today will be only the 16th show), but for lovers of Soca music in Calgary we hope that the "Carnival Mix" is becoming your weekly link to some of the best music that comes out of the Caribbean.

Last week's 'Friday Fete' generated over $1000 which went to support 2 of Calgary's local bands and includes a $250 donation to CJSW radio from listeners like you.

Today's show (October 26th) we hope to continue that support from listeners, as there will be giveaways throughout the hour.  Exclusive CD mixes, CJSW gear, and one lucky winner will get a gift basket including 2 tickets to your choice of ANY ONE Soca event that comes to Calgary in the next year!

For more info on the station's funding drive, check out the article in Avenue Magazine

The show is on live every Wednesday from 6-7pm on 90.9fm and streaming at www.cjsw.com

      Fete on Friday Oct.21st

Its Here! Calgary Soca is proud to present our first ever event! The "Friday Fete" happens on October 21st 2011 and features live bands Infiniti and Explosion for everyone's enjoyment, plus Drew and Wolston will be supplying the tunes in between the bands. As any real "feter" knows, there must be a full bar and food for sale, so we've got that too.

      CJSW - CarnivalMix - Oct.19.2011

With one week to the annual funding drive for CJSW radio, Drew turns it up a notch with a show featuring only hits from today and 'yester-year'. Some of the other members of CalgarySoca make an appearance as well. Beside the obvious full hour of heat, the standout for us is the Scrunter cover to Lord Kitchener's classic, 'Sugar Bum Bum'.... Benjai out, Tallpree in for "Got Soca" fete on Saturday

Word from Baje Promotions is that Grenada Soca sensation, Tallpree will be performing this coming weekend for the "Got Soca" fete at the Pineridge Community Centre in place of T&T's Benjai.  No details were given as to why Benjai will not be attending, but we are still looking forward to the show as Tallpree, Problem Child and Skinny Fabulous still adds up to an excellent line-up.

CJSW radio in Calgary will now bring Soca to the airwaves every Wednesday from 6-7pm. The show will be hosted by Calgary Soca's own Drew Atlas and feature everything from classic Soca hits to the latest "riddims" from your favourite artists.

Click on the "Listen Now" tab on CalgarySoca.com and enjoy the show!

Now a good show needs a strong name and here's your chance to help. We have a few ideas already but there is always room for more so leave your creative show name in the comment section below.

Whether we use a suggested name or not, we'll pick a name from all the suggestions and giveaway a pair of tickets to the "End of Summer Soca fete" with DJ Soca Sweetness on August 27th. So get creative and the tickets could be yours. Good luck.

        Machel "Taking Advantage"....of Edmonton....on a Wednesday!

I know, I know its not the best day of the week to check a Soca phenom, but it is Machel after all!  We'll see you Wednesday August 24th at the Edmonton (yes Edmonton) Event Centre in West Edmonton Mall.  Machel Montano (no HD family) and Reggae sensation, Gyptian! Get all the details on the facebook page.   Call 1-855-985-5000 for tickets or purchase online.  You can get tickets in Calgary at Island Beat.

Fay Ann put "Pressure" on Edmonton....and she wasn't alone!

Last weekend's Cariwest Celebration in Edmonton was full of Calgary people both in the Parade and the Afterparty. True to form, both Calgary's T&T association and Sykotik mas brought out impressive costumes that took to the streets to show their colours. The highlight of the festival was of course Fay Ann Lyons performance at the Canadian Druze Centre later that evening.

Thanks to Evan T Rutherford, I.V Entertainment and the Cariwest, the place was filled from early. The Soca was going strong right up until 3am with help from Vancouver's "Agent Mulda", Canada's most requested Soca DJ "Soca Sweetness" and a bit of "Hype" on the mic from Calgary-Soca's own, Drew Atlas.

The surprise of the day was the announcement that Bunji Garlin was going to join Fay Ann on Stage that night. Needless to say, the party was insane with the addition of the "Fire Man" as both Bunji and Fay Ann treated the crowd to hit after hit. Check out some of the pics here. Thanks to Deborah S.
